What is Cacao of Excellence?

Cacao of Excellence is the global platform that discovers, promotes, and celebrates the world’s best cacao and the producers behind it.

Since 2009, we’ve brought international recognition to cacao farmers by showcasing superior quality and flavour diversity from all producing origins. At the heart of our work is the Cacao of Excellence Awards — the most prestigious global competition for cacao quality, held every two years.

Through the Awards and our broader programme, we:

  • Recognise the achievements of exceptional cacao producers

  • Raise awareness of cacao flavour diversity and excellence

  • Strengthen national cacao quality systems

  • Provide access to training, tools, and technical knowledge

  • Connect producers with markets, partners, and new opportunities

Our impact so far:

  • 55+ cacao-producing origins engaged

  • Over 1,250 cacao samples selected and evaluated

  • 400+ awarded as Best 50 in the world

  • 25+ national cacao competitions established

  • 45 National Organisation Committees formed, strengthening and promoting cacao quality at national-level.

  • Representation of thousands of producers, families, and communities

From its beginnings as a competition, Cacao of Excellence has grown into a trusted global platform — one that combines scientific rigour, capacity building, and global recognition to transform how quality cacao is valued and rewarded.

 

Established in 2009, Cacao of Excellence is led by the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), part of the CGIAR.
