Cacao industry mourns the loss of visionary leader Ed Seguine

The global cacao community is deeply saddened by the passing of Ed Seguine, founder and driving force behind the Cacao of Excellence programme and champion for a sustinable cacao sector. Since 2008, Ed has been at the heart of the programme, receiving cacao samples from all over the world, giving his 100% to every bean for every producer, with his unmatched knowledge and expertise. His passion for celebrating the work of cacao producers and recognising their expertise was evident in everything he did.

For the Cacao of Excellence team, its Technical Committee members - to which Ed was Chair, its Advisory Council, Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT colleagues and its partners, Ed was more than a leader, he was a mentor, kind and generous in spirit, with an incredible knowledge and humour. His understanding and appreciation of the diversity found in the cacao species and the people who cultivate it, has shaped the industry profoundly. His generosity, wisdom, and passion for improving the lives of cacao producers will forever remain his legacy. Ed’s significant contributions to the protocols and procedures found in the Guide for the Assessment of Cacao Quality and Flavour form the backbone of the Guide and are just another example of his legacy.

Dr Darin Sukha, Co-Founder of the Cacao of Excellence programme and Technical Committee member recalls, "Ed Seguine came into my life on a cool tropical day in Trinidad 24 years ago.  His deep passion for learning about all things cocoa and chocolate, his ability to very clearly and eloquently communicate his thoughts, even in the most tense situations whilst displaying genuine leadership have been amazing, inspiring and aspirational.  He shared the gift of his palate and tasting prowess to the cocoa world, and for this we are ever grateful for his contribution to the Cacao of Excellence Programme.  His hands touched every aspect of the CoEx programme and his palate every sample that would have been converted to liquor and chocolate in the CoEx Programme.  He was a leader, mentor, friend and father figure to all of us who interacted with and learnt from him.   Rest in peace Ed, your thoughts and actions have illuminated a path for us to follow as part of your enduring legacy.

Juan Lucas Restrepo, Director General of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT shares, "Even while facing physical challenges, Ed Seguine made the journey to Rome—not just to inaugurate the new Cacao of Excellence Laboratory and Training Centre, but to be there, fully present, always engaged, always supportive. His passion and dedication to the cacao community were unwavering, even in the most difficult times. Ed's friends, our community, and the entire cacao sector hold only thoughts of deep respect and gratitude for this remarkable man. His contributions went far beyond the technical aspects of cacao; he brought a sense of connection, care, and wisdom that touched all who knew him. Ed’s legacy will forever resonate in the world he helped shape, a world richer in flavour, knowledge, and friendship because of him."

For the entire industry, Ed will always be synonymous with tireless dedication, inspiration and a brilliant mind. He shared with us all his vast experience with the endless diversity of aromas and flavours in cacao, and his spirit will continue to inspire us as we carry his vision forward. Rest in peace Ed.
